Have fun, take no survivors. They're hard to keep in the game bag anyway, :D

Get us some pictures or video or something. Even if you don't get any, I'd sure like to see a tree taller than a one story house.

Chris,

I am going to be bluntly honest here, but dont take it wrong. I always thought that squirrel hunting was pretty silly. How hard could it be to shoot those little critters that run across the road in front of you?

Well, I have found out a little bit about it lately. Yesterday when we were out walking the dogs, they found a squirrel in an oak tree. They are hard to see in trees with leaves on them! Then, the squirrel will stay on the opposite side of the tree that you are on. Roy, my husband had a pistol with him and he finally got a good shot at the squirrel. Since our dogs are a little gun shy, we are always looking for something to shoot for them to set in their minds that a shot equals a critter for them. Anyway, Roy is not as good of shot as he used to be because he wears tri-focals. He shot at the squirrel, but hit the limb underneath it. The squirrel started running and jumping along limbs until he finally hit the ground and disappeared into the brush. All 3 dogs were still looking up in the tree when we were yelling "get it"!! :)) It was a fiasco!! One little squirrel against 2 humans and three lacy dogs!! Squirrels 1 lacys 0!!

Betty,

I don't take it personally! As Steve put it our trees are "taller than a 1 story house." That alone makes it a little more difficult...our Loblolly Pine trees can reach 115 feet and some oaks 80-90 feet. :-b It's not that it is that hard to kill them...it's just a lot of fun to be out there with friends and family letting the dogs work a stretch of hardwoods and then hauling butt to them to kill a squirrel or two....then off to the next tree! Otherwise you must still hunt them...which isn't half as much fun...but still fun! Also, they taste really good fried up with some mashed taters and purple hull peas fresh from the garden!!! Maybe we can get some of you Texan's on a good squirrel hunt one of these days when I get these Lacy dogs working them over good! ;)

I can see that would be fun!! I just couldnt believe that the squirrel this morning got away on the GROUND without any of the 3 seeing it!! Duh, what were they thinking? But, on their side, they have never seen a squirrel jump down out of a tree and run. I pretty much guarantee had Abe seen it, it wouldnt have gotten away!!

That's why I hunt lions. Anyone can see one of them jump out of a tree!

Betty after the leaves get off the trees, those little buggers wont hardly climb unless a dog is on their tail. You can ease through the woods and shoot some, but most will see you long before you see them. They will skedaddle down through the woods and all you"ll do is hear them in the leaves. :)) A good squirrel dog will "timber", and follow the squirrel from tree to tree and keep up with him for you. All you have to do is follow their eyes to find the squirrel. It is a real joy to watch these dogs work.

Chris how did the weekend go?
