Slim is almost 4 months old and doing great . I have been hiding a dove (frozen) in the bushes and working with her to get her to sniff em out on occasion and she does it good on the command "fetch". She will also go get it if I throw it but doesn't want to bring it back because she is raw fed and thinks its food or wants to play games with me. I have been shooting a .22 around her a bunch so I was hoping her first dove hunt she would not be scared.

First hunt was yesterday and she did GREAT ! Not scared of the .12 gauge at all. I put her on her tracking lead so that I could get her if she tried to eat my dove. She sniffed several out in the thick stuff that I couldn't find and even found one that someone else couldn't find. The only one that I shot and she saw fall she ran out there and got it and brought it right back ! I think I might have a bird dog AND a tracking dog folks ! Once she figures out to look the direction I am shooting then she will see them all fall and should get better and better.

lol :))

we have the same problem with Rowdy - first time I shot and then chunked the bird out there.

she ate it whole :-o

next time Court shot one in the field we managed to coax her to drop it but now she takes off every time she hears a shot go off......

FOOOOOOD!!!!

I would like to talk with some actual bird dog owners that raw feed and see how they handle the eating situation. Ben is not raw fed, but he will sure eat those birds! Tia, Donny's lab would eat them some too.

Thanks for posting the pictures and info on Slim. She seems to be doing really good and we always enjoy the story and pics!

I'm glad she's working so well for you!

I think using a frozen dove while she was very young might have had something to do with her not being able to eat it up quickly and it gave me enough time to teach her that she isn't supposed to eat it . Now all that could change when she gets older and can gobble them down quick but we will cross that bridge when we get there. We should make a few more dove hunts and as quick as she learns she should get a little better each time. I will keep you all updated.

She is doing well on her mock trails and we have a little over a month until bow season starts in Alabama.

Sounds a little crude but I had a bird dog trainer tell he would wrap a frozen pidgin in barbed wire to teach dog to have a softer mouth....

Grady, you should post a picture of Slim with the dove on the Facebook page. This week's photo contest theme is "Lacys Retrieving"!
