Court hasn't mentioned a thing about the bird dog that Rowdy has turned into ;)

Sure wish I would have thought to grab the video camera......

Are y'all saying I need to go dove hunting again so I can get some video of Rowdy retrieving the birds?

I was just telling DJ about this yesterday when we were cooking dove. I'm proud of Rowdy girl!

Lacys are just so versatile. Aggie, our grittiest hog dog, can also retrieve dove...I think that's amazing.

This was a total, blind retrieve just using her nose!

Court and her dad went out and shot a few birds while I stayed back and worked on the barn with the dogs.

They ended up with two they couldn't find, but knew the general area they had landed.

Rowdy found the first one in just a few minutes, still alive - she got to it right about the time it flew off :)

The second one she was jumping up at the base of a cedar tree, acting really excited, standing up on her hind legs - Johnnie was on one side of the tree and I was on the other - couldn't see anything, but Rowdy sniffed the bird out and ended up chasing it down and catching it (and not eating it) :D

honestly, we were all three just kind of standing there like "did that really just happen? did she find both of those birds??" Good girl.......

I have to admit to being impressed! Rowdy was totally focussed and did everything she could to get those birds.

I've hunted over some good dogs before, but in every case, they had the advantage of seeing the birds go down - at least within the general area. Rowdy wasn't even in the pasture when our birds went down so she had to rely totally on her nose and instincts. I sure wish we had video of her chasing down that second bird! She was awesome! :ymapplause:

Go Rowdy!!! Amazing yes ... surprising no ... that Rowdy is a go-getter!

Apparently it runs in the family genes ... Gunner (Mr. Socks to Courtney lol) has also started finding doves. He's been on 4 dove hunts and when they can't find the dove .... they grab Gunner and he found them every single time!!! Rowdy can't wait to see your dove video... you'll have to send it to your nephew!! lol

As long as a dog has strong play drive, he can be taught to retrieve. Most lacy puppies will naturally chase anything that moves and bite all matter.

Rowdy is the first lacy I've had that isn't afraid of gunfire. In fact, she adores it. Early on, she made an association between guns and dead critters. Now when I shoot a gun, she starts running in the direction the barrel is pointing.

When I trained my Lab years ago, all training books suggested firing a blank everytime you fed them to get them to associtate it with something good. It worked very well for my dog.
