Amber, I took my 82 year old grandmother hunting for a management buck. This old bruiser showed up and her trusty .243 barked. The buck didn't go too far but the shot was a little high and far back so he didn't leave much of a blood trail. I let Rowdy work it out and she found him in no time flat. That little dog turns into a different animal when it comes to game. She is all drive and there is no stopping it. Heaven help the one that actually tries to run away from her.

We aged the buck at 5.5 to 6.5 years old.

Found a doe for a bowhunter Saturday night. They claimed the doe was shot a little high and far back early that morning. They said they searched for 2.5 hours. There were a few drops of blood where she was shot and a few drops on a game trail about 100 yards away (according to the hunters.) No visible sign other than that.
Luna took off - on a string at first - then she started making sweeps 40-50 yards wide. After 30 minutes of tracking, I noticed the gps showed we were making a gradual turn back toward the stand. Luna backtracked a couple of times but continued to work the same area. Ultimately, she found the doe 275 yards from the stand but the doe had made a 400-500 yard semi circle. I believe she bedded in some thick white brush once or twice before expiring. I considered this a pretty difficult track so I'm proud of my old dog. Aged 12 hours, about 4 tablespoons of blood, trail contaminated and tons of live deer scent everywhere.

That's great. Luna's still got it. ;)

Here's a question for you. Now that you have two tracking dogs, how do you decide which dog to take on a tracking call?

It can be a pain but what I do is if one of my dogs aren't working the track hard or just seems to be disinterested I will switch them out. My goal is to find the deer so I will use every tool in my box if it helps........

Rowdy is not what I would consider a "finished" deer dog. I am still trying to get her as much experience as possible but for the difficult tracks, or the ones I know are going to be difficult, I will use Luna. However, Rowdy is much grittier than Luna has ever been. Rowdy would bay and catch a wounded deer and has enough bottom to pursue that deer until it's finished. I hope to be using two dogs on every track by the end of this season or next. By the time Rowdy is in her prime, Luna will probably be close to retirement.
