We have a great new article on the blog from our very own Jim Browning. It is a very thorough explanation to Operant Conditioning and why every Lacy owner can benefit from it: http://workinglacys.wordpress.com/2009/ ... ditioning/. I know several of us are working with this method, but I encourage everyone takes a look, it really can be applied to any dog in any discipline.

So what do you all think of Operant Conditioning and Clicker Training? Who has used OC and who is planning to try it?

Great job! The thing that stood out most to me is getting a dog to think for itself. When a dog accomplishes thinking on its own that behavior is now a much easier learned behavior. Of course we all want them to be "good" learned behaviors but there are always some slip ups. At work I see it all the time and see the benefits. It's hard for me to explain right now but once a dog starts thinking and figuring things out mostly on it's own the trainer can just "run" with it and enjoy the great training opportunities ahead of them.

I have had great results operant conditioning. Sadie learns a new task quickly and I let her know when she does things right or when she does thing that I like.

One such thing is when were on natural blood trail and she comes across a track in the mud. She breaths in deep and I click. She is becoming a very good tracker.

Sadie is almost 5 months old and we have been on some very exciting deer blood trails.

I tried the clicker for a little while, but it was inconvenient to have to have it with me all the time. I took a tip from Leerburg, and I use my voice. It's always with me. I know it isn't as sharp and distinct to register as the clicker, but it's been working. I just tell him "Yes" and he knows he's doing the right thing. I say it the same way every time, and I can get it out immediately.

Either way, OC works great!
