With this weather and the Acorns dropping, the pigs have been coming out of the river bottom and moving around quite a bit. Will has been catching a big boar with 3" teeth on the trail camera at his feeder behind the house pretty regularly. Often times the boars portraits coincide with nights that my dogs are going nuts in their kennels.

Unfortunately, even though I live in no mans land, it is in a small ranchette type community and I live on only 10 acres, so I cant just go cut them loose to catch it.

Well, last night was one of those nights. The dogs started going ballistic at about 10:30 and even though my kennels are solid, made of panel with roofs and no gaps, Banjo got out. I found the little man this morning laid up in the bed of my truck with all of his pads blown out, missing a toe nail and a couple of patches of hair but lacking any cuts.

I sure wish that I had a GPS collar on him but I guess that I can assume that he showed good bottom considering his condition.

I hope that he had fun last night because now he will be out until his feet heal.

Steve

I still think that dog is a weenie ;) He's gotta quit getting himself in messes so he can start hunting for real!

Whew, glad that he made it home!! And with no more damage than what he had!! I think they call that 'dogged determination'!

Sounds to me like it's time to talk to the neighbors.

Well, I went and checked on him a little while ago and it looks like he didn't get out of it unscathed after all....... He is snake bit on the foot he favored the most. This morning there was no swelling but now it is blown up like a balloon and the toe that took a fang has ruptured......

Damn dogs ~X(

Well I just got home and saw two dogs running at me. At frist glance I thought great I am about to get attacked by two stray dogs as I walk in my house.......No it was Ben and Colt trying to beat me home! I guess they wanted to go run around the nieghborhood while I was gone. [-x

I'm not sure that beat up is the right word.....

With the swelling localized to his toe and only half of his foot yesterday, I didn't think that he took a big hit. This morning his whole leg is swollen, bruised, loosing hair and obviously painful.

I wish that I had treated immediately but hind sight is always 20/20. He is now on antibiotics, Dexamethazone, Benadryl and Vitamin C.

Between that and Hydro therapy twice daily, he should feel better in 3 days or so but he is going to be out of the woods for several weeks.

Well, Banjo's hunt without me has proved to be his last in this world.

Of a number of snake bites I have witnessed, he is only the second fatality. I have never seen a dog react as acutely or with the array of symptoms that he did. Despite treatment and my constant care, his condition continued to worsen. By early yesterday evening, it had become acute, he fell into an almost catatonic state in the early morning hours and stopped breathing at one minute till 4am this morning.

I guess that he gets to hunt without me in perpetuity now. I bet that he and Jagd have one bayed by sunrise.

I am so very sorry to hear that Banjo didnt make it, Steve. I've always heard that if a dog gets bite in the leg that it will die. Larry didnt prove this out, but Banjo did.

This has been a bad year for rattlers. We just killed another one this morning. I would have stepped on it, had I not been watching where I was walking. It was right in the middle of the road. Roy walked right past it. I guess it was moving slow because the weather is a bit cooler. It was blown to Valhalla!

Hunt happy, Banjo!!
