My brother-in-law and I decided to take Remi out by his house yesterday morning to walk her through those woods and give her every opportunity I can to hunt her so she will start treeing. Well...we hunted for about 20 minutes and bam....it happened!! Remi treed her first official squirrel while we were hunting. I was even able to seal the deal and shoot it out for her! It was the only squirrel we saw so she got the heart, liver and lungs! I couldn't have been more proud! Great start to a new year/decade! Btw...Happy New Year everyone!!!

Bout to head back out for another round!!!

Great deal, Chris! I knew she could do it! And now, all you have to do is to take her to the woods. She has it down now!

Thanks everyone! Yeah she obviously still needs more woods time. Took her out yesterday afternoon and I saw a squirrel on the ground so I walked that direction so that Remi would follow me that way and when she got down there she didn't even make a peep at a tree. We even saw the squirrel in the tree but since she didn't find it we didn't shoot. She seems to not trust her nose as much as she does her eyes. Any ideas on how to get her to trust her nose more?? I'm guessing more woods time...but what do some of yall think

On the other hand...Toby is about to graduate from skins to a live one and is showing some amazing promise!

bboswell:

I started them out on full squirrel skins head to tail and feet on the end of a piece of twine tied to a fishing pole. I drug it around never letting them take it and then running it up the side of trees to let them know where they run. I'd praise them and get real excited. If they barkl while on the tree I really praise them up. After that you trap one and let them go at it while it's in a live trap. Then tie a rope to it and drag it up in a tree. The next step is turning it loose to a lone tree and letting the dog chase it up the tree...then shoot it out after they bark. Next is releasing one they don't see in the woods and letting them scent trail it...then shoot it out when they bark. After that it's hunt...hunt...hunt.

One of the ways we get hound pups to start to use their nose on the ground is to feed them by scattering their food all over the ground. It makes them hunt for their food with their nose. you could also try it using treats.
