Deer season ended in late December our 2011 tracking season is over.

The cold snowy weather of the northeast makes it easy to hibernate and pack on the pounds. The handler and dog relationship is working out well. Sadie motivates me to get outside and burn some calories.

Squirrel hunting works out well. I enjoy watching Sadie run through the woods searching for those crafty tree rats. She is learning new hunting skills which enhances her natural abilities. It’s a win win situation. She gets fooled often but is learning quickly.

Sadie searching intensely for squirrels in the trees.

Sadie will chase and tree the squirrels she sees on the ground. Then I shoot them out of the tree. The ones that are alive when they hit the ground she will try to bay or flip in the air. She is starting to retrieve and bring them back to me.

If were hunting a golf course sometimes she almost catches the ones that wander out on to the fairway.

Very cool :-BD :-BD I assume she is not bothered by the gun shots ? If not did you work with her or was she fine with it right off ?

I love the quotes that you put with the pics!!

My dogs found a squirrel the other day. It made the mistake of running from tree to tree, instead of jumping from tree to tree! Abe knows that the critters are in the tree by smell, but Larry sees them. We like to have never saw that squirrel the other day, but I could tell by watching Larry, that he was watching the squirrel. Finally, we saw it at the very tip top of the tree. They are sneaky little devils!!

The loud blasts from rifles or shotguns don't bother Sadie. When I grab a gun and head for the door she jumps up in the air and nearly does a back flip.

When I got her home in October I did some operant training with her. I placed my black powder rifle on the floor and knelt by it. When she came near I clicked and gave her a treat. Then while still kneeling I picked up the rifle when she came near I clicked then gave her a treat. I did the same thing standing.
The next step we went outside. I put the 209 primer cap in the rifle and shot it as we walked. I clicked and gave her a treat.
It only took a couple of days and she's been fine with gunfire ever since.

Now when I kneel down to pet her and have my empty shotgun across my leg she licks the end of the barrel. I think she likes gunpowder.
