Ok, I have been walking Daisy on leash more. To the park (around people), around the block, ect. She walks fine down the street. Now I put her on leash to trail blood and she looks lazy? When the leash bumps or lightly snags something she turns around to look at me. As to say "what do you want?". Sometimes she will even turn and come back to me. I then have to key her up again.
Will some dogs never work great on leash?
Maybe I am doing things wrong on my end?

The last 3 tracks have been on leash only. With Daisy slacking on leash, can this hurt her performance off leash?

I can only say that her grandmother Bella will not work on a leash same exact deal she will turn aroud and just look at you . Maybe courtney and Rod will chime in Chris.

The only reason I ask is this: everything I have read or been told says it is best to start them on leash. So I figured I did not do so well at that. Maybe I did it wrong, or maybe some dogs just do not work well on leash. I have been blown away by her off leash, but on leash is not so good, LOL.

Interesting, and thanks for the imput! The leash I am useing now is 30' x 3/16" climbers rope. I was thinking of getting something slick instead. Like a cloth line plastic feel?

The big thing is to use a different lead while tracking, and for a fun walk. MOST dogs will learn the difference. The only time I pull out the harness and long lead out is for work. If we walk the dogs on a leash, which doesnt happen very often :)) , we just use a plain leash. Some dogs work better on lead, some dont. Its really up to you on how you like to do it. If you decide to work her off lead, make sure you have a really good handle on her. You should be able to call her off anything. Good luck!

I do use a different leash for walking and even a different collar. She does do better with a collar than with the harness. Time will tell, Thanks for the imput

Some dogs are sensitive to a tracking lead and won't work against a taut line. Give her lots of slack if you aren't doing that already.

Work on mental conditioning. Her desire to pursue the game should be so strong she shows enthusiasm and keen interest in the trail no matter what type of lead she's on. Do some confidence building activities with her. Has she seen a live deer yet? Have you put her in a bay pen?

She could be getting overworking and "burned out" on mock trails too. It's difficult to diagnose a problem without actually seeing the dog / handler at work.

She not seena live deer yet, or been in a bay pen. I do work her on a flirt pole to help exercise her drive. She loves the flirt pole!!!
I do admit that the leash deal could be all my fault? Not ever working a trailing dog before. I try to give her about a week rest between mock trails. I gave her almost two weeks just to make sure not to burn her out between the last 2.
One thing is for sure I am looking forward to the 23rd! Thanks for your reply. :D

Once she gets on a real track, and a deer that is not dead jumps up in front, she won't be concerned at all about a lead... You will be holding on just trying to hold her back!
Rome wasn't built in a day... Patience!!!!
