I am guiding at State Line Bone Mine in Missouri, and they have never had a tracking dog in camp. Yesterday afternoon a client shot a doe out of a large group, and the arrow hit it almost straight down in the middle of the back, with no exit wound. We decided to wait till dark before looking for it, in hopes that a buck might come along too.
I brought Jazz along when I went to pick the hunter up, and we took up the track. Missouri requires the dog to be on a lead, so I hooked her up and we headed out.
The hunter showed us where the deer had been standing when he made the shot and Jazz started pulling at the lead. We found two drops of blood almost a hundred yards later, and no other sign. But Jazz kept tugging, and I told the hunter that she was acting like she was on the right track.
As we made our way along the side of the ridge Jazz kept throwing her head up winding as much as she tracked, but we could find no more blood anywhere. And, about five hundred yards from where we started she suddenly turned up the hill and went into some thick Cedars, pulling like a little freight train. The client worked his way through them faster than I could, and the next thing I heard was, "There she is!"
Needless to say, the topic of discussion at the dinner table was Lacy dogs, and I now have a couple of new names on my waiting list!
My little red girl dog sure made me proud!

It's good to hear stories about her working! I know that she is dearly loved, but to know that she can get out there and do the job just makes me that much more happier!
