Back story, I took a tracking call 2nd weekend of now season. When we meet the guys shows me trail cam shots of the buck which was very nice!

I dropped Blue where the buck was shot, he took us easily to where the guy lost the track and kept pulling hard even though I couldn't see a drop. Well about 70 yards later I see a decent spot of blood where the deer stopped but did not bed, another 60-70 yards another spot, he keeps pulling until we hit a logging road. We go up and down the road and he can't find a thing.

Back to the start and he pulls me down exact same trail and hit the road in the exact same spot.

We worked up and down the road more and even worked a couple of obvious game trails. No luck so I called off the track. I HATE that.

Anyway, the guy called today to let me know that he had killed that same buck Friday morning. Buck wasn't even limping despite still having a Muzzy 4 blade stuck in his shoulder!

It feels good to get confirmation that the deer was still alive and we didn't fail!

It does make you feel better. We took five calls last year, found zero! Four of the five come to find out were killed later in the year.

We took one today I really didnt want to, but it was just down the road. As soon as I pulled up I see a guy leaving with his wiener dog. ~X( I went and surveyed the blood they had found. I went ahead and stuck the dogs on it and they had NO interest in tracking. Found no more blood so I just cut them loose and let them roam. We worked the whole pasture and found nothing. Looks like one that will live another day

This situation happens more than you think, especially with a bow. I had a hunter shot a nice buck last year with a rifle, I was with the hunter and felt like he had made a good hit. Pup lost him around 500 yards out. I felt like we should have found the deer and did not charge the hunter. We harvested the buck after Christmas, completely healed.

Desperate hunters will tell you just about anything, in hopes that by some miracle you can locate their deer, which "just has to be dead"!
I turn down a lot of calls, because I have been on too many where "there's blood everywhere" turns out to be a small puddle where a deer stood for a moment as it decided what the next move was.
And, the "perfect hit, right behind the shoulder" might be what the hunter wanted, but it is frequently a figment of his imagination.

If I sound cynical, so be it! People thinking that tracking dogs are miracle workers is BS... I charge to travel. What happens after I arrive depends on whether they really want me to start the track, or not.
I can find plenty of better ways to spend my time than chasing after deer that aren't dead, and I will call the search off and load up quickly if it's really a waste of time.
Letting your dog roam around when there is nothing to be found encourages them to gain bad habits! And, worse, folks will start saying your dog isn't that good! Try that one on for size and see how it suits you!

It seems like like a groundhogs day on many of my calls, guess I should know by now. ~X( I took a call the other night, same old story.....deer fell, we have blood, blah, blah, blah. The arrow had blood, and maybe a quarter size puddle where the deer fell. I really do not like tracking at night, and would much rather get out at first light when the ground is still moist, but the hunter really wanted to look that night. I suck Ben on the blood and he was really winding, but was working. He would work about 50 yards throw his head up and make an adjustment, I was not seeing any blood but knew he was working something. After about 200 yards the dad gave up and went back to the truck. Me and the hunter kept on and after another 200 yards we picked up on some blood. I was really happy Ben had put us on blood after nothing for around 400 yards. We followed blood for another 200 yards and lost it again. After that Ben was done and I called it.

I hate to turn down the calls cause they all sound "good", but am getting really tired of my dogs working there butt and not finding the deer.

Yep I know the feeling. Daisy is 3 for 5 this year. The 2 no finds are my fault. I looking back I would not have put her on the trail with her being so young.
