Went out a couple hours ago and put out a mock trail. This trail is 550yards with only 4oz of blood. It has two 90deg turns and one 180deg backtrack. The plan is to let it set over night and age 12+ hours. We will hit it up at first light and try to get it done before church.
It is a tough trail in some thick brush and crosses one old country dirt road. I honestly believe Daisy will have to work hard to get this done :). Best of luck to us.

Ok boys and girls we are loading up and will be on the road in a few. We will attempt to tackle this mock trail. This over all is the toughest I have put out yet.

Well ok here is the good and bad.

The good,
We finished the trail :)
Daisy's first 12+ hour trail (great experience for us both)
The Alpha system worked flawless
Daisy recalled perfect in the woods

The Bad,
It took a long time to finish
Daisy broke concentration a few times
(She showed her puppy age, lol)
Had to help more than I would have wanted

I honestly did know and feel that it was going to be a challenge. I am overall happy with the day. Even if it could have been better. If I had to place a score on it. I would give today's effort a D.
Better luck next time, always improving!

Good job Chris the only way she will learn those tuff one is to do what you are doing. She will get with practice.

I could tell by her body language that she was unsure most of the time. There was parts that she really picked up well and showed great poise. I know she is not a master tracker yet, lol. Hard work and practice will pay off. :)

I should have started her on older trails sooner. Oh well live and learn. I am looking forward to testing her at the May 11th event.

she sounds like me, I run around feeling unsure alot myself........she will be fine......her grade was probably a little better than you actually gave her.........there will always be room for improvement...for the dog and the handler....thats one of the things that makes this game fun......

It sounds like you are doing a very good job of training your pup. Don't be discouraged if the time comes when it really acts like it has never learned anything, because once they have been on real trails I believe mock trails are not as interesting.
There is no doubt that they know the difference, so the reward at the end is not the same.

I believe you are correct! I think I might also spot drag a hide next time. Just carry the hide and let it touch the tall grass and thickets every so often.

I take a deer leg, and use pipe straps to attach it to a stick, then use it as a walking stick as I lay the trail.I can definitely tell the difference in the level of enthusiasm that my dog shows

While building a motivated, independent tracker, don’t be afraid to let her work through things on her own. Learning takes place best the dogs are given the chance to make the decision and do the right thing on their own. If she knows what is expected of her, but she seems unsure of herself, give her the opportunity to succeed or fail without too much guidance or repetition of commands. After you have given her plenty of time to correct herself, if she still fails, take her back to the last spot of blood you can see and give her another chance to work it out. Too much guidance can cause a dog to become too dependent on you.

With most game-bred dogs, the drive and desire to hunt and track is so ingrained you really don't have to do much training. It's just a matter of showing them what it is you want them to do. When a dog has successfully found several deer, I back off on mock trails completely. There is no substitute for the real thing.
