25 yds with a slight crosswind, and he nailed it.I am so pleased with his progress, drive and behavior in general. Weve still gotta long row to hoe, but its gonna be a blast

#4 Trail was a little over 40 yds, with (1) 90 turn.He started a little fast for my liking, but he was focused. He left the trail at 30 yds for a brief moment, but quickly reengaged the trail, nose dow.He overshot the 90 by about 10ft but soon realized he was off course, and made a circle.Picked up the trail again and snatched up the hide.I am so proud of this pup!

The ability for a dog to make a mistake, recognize the mistake, and correct himself is very important. It sounds like your pup is going to make a great tracker.

Well mock #5 didnt go well.45 yds,(1) 90 degree turn, aged 2 hrs, with a good wind at our back. Also this was his first attempt at a trail that was not on our property. He hadnt eaten in 24 hrs,in preparation for this trail. After 10 or 15 minutes of trying to get him to engage the start of the trail, his lack of Interest was obvious.I led him away, and loaded him back in the truck. We will attempt another trail tomorrow evening, hopefully with a better outcome. In the meantime, hes gonna be hungry

In a situation like that, you might try motivating him with small pieces of food.
Show him you have the food, then direct him to the blood trail. The second you observe good scenting behavior, mark it verbally ("yes" "good boy!" ect..) and reward him with a treat.
Every time that puppy sticks his nose on the trail, mark and reward.

You are teaching him to work the trail in order to access a reward.

Mock #6 I would also call a failure.I just dont understand. He hadnt eaten a bite in 48hrs,I figured he would be all over it!We have only done 1 trail/wk,so I dont think hes overworked. When we play tug with a deer hide, the little bugger fights with all hes got,so I know hes got the drive.Im not too big to ask for help,so please let me know if you have any ideas

A puppy needs to be given plenty of repeat tracks. You have lots of time to work him on harder and longer tracks. Keep the tracks short to keep his work at his attention span level, which is not much right now. He is still just a baby. And, after he isnt a baby anymore, he will be a teenager, which will be just a step above being a baby!! His attention span will be better, but his attitude will be bad! :))

JMHO, but a puppy of 12 weeks should never go without food for 2 days. A puppy that age should be eating 3 times a day. To let him fast for 2 days is not the same as fasting a grown dog for 2 days. Let him be hungry, but not that hungry.

Dont get discouraged, training a dog is just that- training. If they got it after just a few tracks, all dogs would be great trackers! ;)

I didnt even think of nutrional consequences per say, thanks Betty for pointing that out.I just figured a hungry pup would be all nose.I think Im gonna give him a short break, and start over at short liver drags.I believe that I didnt give him enough time to build confidence and master the easy stuff. At 12 wks he bays my wifes cat,and terrorizes her lap dog, wrestles all day with my BMC,and will fight a deer hide to the death,so I know hes got the drive :(
