Rebecca,

The difference really doesn't have much to do with the way they look; it's genetic. It can distinguish the color of their nose leather, but sometimes you can only tell when they're still a puppy.

Take a look at this article, and read about the B locus.

Amos is probably a ir^y/ir^y, like his sister Sunny.

I love those super light eyes. Though I think Sadie is gorgeous, I was sorta disappointed when her eyes didn't "change." When I got her, there was still a little bit of blue left, they were sort of indigo-brownish, so they did change a lighten, but only to an amber brown. The breeder told me they'd get yellow eventually. Anyways...

Blues (B_/dd) and grays (bb/dd) will usually look similar. But the blues start from a black base, the grays from a chocolate base. That is why the blue dogs can have darker eyes, because they are starting from black. Which is also why they can have darker coats. The darkest blues, the ones that look charcoal or truly blue, will be BB or Bb. The bb dogs will be start from a lighter point so they don't have the darker range. But just like the eye color, both coat colors can get to the lighter range.

I bet if we looked closely at puppies, we'd see more differences between the B_ and bb coat colors. But we'd have to look at them when they're young. It was mentioned in another thread, but the blue coats show more sun damage, especially here in Texas, which makes it harder to tell the true shade.
