Red picked up a cough while at work with me recently. I am thinking it is not bordatella, seeing as he was vaccinated about two months ago and it's not very serious. However, he has been keeping me up at night and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to help him quit coughing? It's not a rattling cough, but mostly just a dry hacking or retching... I'm not about to take him to the vet for overpriced antibiotics...

Thanks, everyone.

Could be allergies, Ben will get a little cough during the dry hot summers. Many of your hunting type dogs will get a cough due to having there noses to the ground picking up dust and pollen. I took Ben to the vet the first time but have learned to just wait it out and he gets over it when the weather cools down and its not so dry.

By the time I woke up this morning, it had progressed to worse hacking and coughing up phlegm. Looks to be kennel cough, according to most online sources. I tried a couple of things that I had around the house for him. Honey was suggested, but that didn't help him for more than 5 minutes. I even made him a bowl of chicken noodle soup, lol.

I usually wouldn't be so concerned, but I need to board him on Monday and obviously they won't take a dog with kennel cough, haha. I am guessing he picked it up at the kennel last time I had him with me...

Keep an eye on him. Bordatella usually isn't serious, but it affects some dogs worse than others. When Aggie got it several years ago, she nearly died from a high fever.

He had the vaccine before he got it, but I think it had been going around up here and he must have cought a weird strain of it... I'll keep an eye on him. I know Levi had kennel cough after surgery a few years ago, but it was gone in a matter of days. Red seems to be pretty active and eating still, so hopefully it runs its course quickly.

Rachael,

I hope that Red is doing ok by now. I dont have any suggestions about any remedy for the actual cough aspect, but I would suggest getting something to boost his immune system. A good probiotic or colostrum would be good. Both of them, you would have to get at a health food store or some place like Central Market.

He started getting worse real fast, so I gave in and took him in to the vet. :( A hundred dollars later, I've got him on some Clavamox and hopefully he'll be back to normal soon... I was told a bad strain of bordatella was going around San Antonio. I suppose him being at the kennel with me didn't help much.
