Post subject:  What in the world?!

Ok the other night Sam jumped down from the bed as I was walking through the door and ended up between me and hitting his lower left ribs against the corner of the end table. The next day this jelly-fluid like bump, about the size of my palm, has shown up in the same area. For some reason I'm thinking it's a hematoma (sp?) bruise and the fluid will eventually be reabsorbed into his body or is there something else it may be? Has anyone had this before on their Lacy's? He's so rambunctious at times and I don't want to take him to a vet to tell me just to wait it out. It's not painful to him when I rub or manipulate it, but he growled at Shane when he attempted to rub it. It's not hindering him and just thought with all of your experience and history with Lacys someone may have seen this before in other pups. Please let me know ... I figured if it's not gone down or gets any bigger we may have to take a trip to the vet.

I say that it is a hematoma. Abe and Larry got into a pretty bad fight when we had a female out here. Abe wound up with a hematoma on his shouler blade. It was pretty big and Roy worried about it, more than me, but I've seen several hematomas on my kids and the dogs. It took a while for Abe's to start going away, but once it started, it went away pretty quick. His was probably a little bigger than a golf ball.

Colt got into a scuffle with a BMC and had one on his shoulder about the size of my fist. It looked like he was sweating blood after a few days. Best I could figure is that he had damage from one of the dogs canine teeth but there was no puncture.

sounds similar except he's not sweating blood ---thank God that would've definitely freaked me out not knowing that it could happen :-w

Well crap, Sam had to go to the vet today for that "hematoma" on his ribs, it got bigger and hard over the weekend and now he'll have a drip drain for about 5 days. :-s Apparently they have another lacy @ the vet now with the same thing but it's on her face. Luckily Dr. Kevin is a Lacy lover and will work with us ... have a feeling Sam will be in the cone of shame when he gets picked up today. Boy this is going to be fun!

is that what the vet thought it was? a hematoma caused by an injury?

That's what the vet told Shane... Shane said when he picks up Sam he will get a better answer and let me know. Poor other Lacy has been having a hard time with a similar one on its face and having a hard time getting rid of it. Said Sam's shouldn't be as bad a case as that one. Ugh I hate injuries like this! Vet says that the body is trying to send healing antibodies to the area but due to the injury causing a "space" they're not getting in there and it keeps filling up the are outside the space with fluid.

My aunt's dog had a hematoma in the ear flap. The tip of the ear filled up with fluid. She thought about taking the dog in to have the mass drained but she kept putting it off and the bulge eventually went away on its own. It did leave the ear slightly deformed though.

Courtney this is probably why we waited thru this weekend. We were hoping it would go down on its own instead it got bigger and harder. Dr. Kevin says it would've continued to fill up at this point or turn into an infection. I just can't chance a huge nasty infection right now with Belle preggers and pups on the way. Plus he's too pretty to have a deformed left rib cage lol!

I'm glad it's nothing serious. Lacys seem to be prone to strange injuries! Last year, Aggie somehow ran a stick through her tongue while she was hunting!

What?! That's crazy, believable but crazy!

Well Shane just called as he just picked up a sedated Sam. It is a seroma not a hematoma and it was pretty nasty when they drained it ... Shane says it's going to be a constant drip for the next 5 days so I guess me and Sam are sleeping in the RV since he can't be around the other dogs until he's healed and the back yard is connected to the back door. He's on antibiotics and has the cone of shame on too.

I saw the pics on FB. Poor Sam! That cone wouldn't last a minute on my two. :)

Well the cone is off this morning and Sam is sporting a t-shirt of Cole's to help keep drained fluids dripping everywhere, the cone was making him so anxious ... and well walking a tracking dog with an e-collar is more comical than anything! had to clean all the debris he picked up like a shovel trying to sniff the cat trail, rabbit trail ... and probably a lizard trail too!

Shane allowed Sam to come in the house with everyone else this morning and is keeping close watch on everyone. So far Sam is happy, is not even bothering the drain drip and the others are also leaving it alone. But he will be walked on a leash for potty time until this is taken out (hopefully Friday or Monday at the latest). All I know is I am tired from a night of whining and trying to keep a Lacy calm and quiet so he won't rip out the stitches. (-|
