Starting a new thread that will be dedicated to color genetics only. Not to someones opinion about anything but the genetics side. Opinions about the standards or anything else will be deleted from this post.

For those of you who have tri-colored dogs, I would like for you to do me a favor. Look at the under part of the dogs coat. I looked at Lucy, because of what JP told me and I found out that she is merely deceiving me as to what color she actually is. She is one of the many lacys that have a darker streak down her back. The hair on the back is all dark gray-lighter at the follicle, but still gray. The hair on the sides starts out as white, then goes to a very light beige, then to dark gray. The hair is almost white, with just the tiniest bit of the end of the hair being gray. I have never thought of Lucy as a blue tri- she has always been so dark, that I thought of her as more of a dark gray and black colored dog.

Abe's hair starts out as light gray - shades to a dark gray- then the tip of the hair is brown. On the back, his hair is dark gray at the follicle, then is brown on the tips.

Larry's hair is much more uniform in color on a particular hair shaft, but he has hairs that are completely dark gray, from the beginning to the end of the shaft. Then, he has hairs that are a dark gray- shading to the dark gray. He has a few hairs that have brown on the tips, but not anything like Abe does.

What this has to do with much of anything at this point, I dont have a clue, but closer examination of the hair shaft does sure make you think about what color your dog really is!

I finally talked with UCDavis today and the swabs are being shipped. I will send swabs to those who want the color genetic testing done. There will be 3 swabs per dog as evidently, some people have trouble getting enough DNA on a swab, so 3 swabs will be used for each dog. I will need pics of each dog that you want tested so that I can send them to JP. She will tell us which color they need to test for. A one color test is $45 and each test after that is either $20 or $25 (cant remember right now) so she can save us money by telling us what to test for. Each dog owner will have to pay for the tests themselves and I will go into that more with the individuals. I am going to have the test results sent back to me, so I will need permission from each owner for that also. I will then send the results to the owner, I just want to make sure that I get all of the results.

When the results are all in, JP will look at all of this information and give us an updated report on the colors of the lacy dog. Should be interesting and informative!!

I finally got around to getting the swabs for Lucy and for Abe in the mail today. I think that Clifford has mailed his in. So, we are finally on our way! Hopefully, now, some of the others will be able to get their swabs done and mailed.

I am testing some dogs who have different coat colors from the norm, plus dogs like Lucy, who is a normal colored tri. I am having Abe tested for specific things because he really has the brownish color to his coat. Rob has swabbed Colt and I am having him tested because he is what I consider to be a true red. All of this is being done with JP telling me what to test for so that she will be able to get the color genetics of the Lacy dog set. Once this is done, we will be able to explain why a dog has the color that it does. It will also help, down the line for those breeders who want to be able to produce colors closer to what the want other than just throwing the dice.

Got my results back from UCDavis today!! So exciting! I dont understand it all, so have sent them on to JP for her to interpret and get back with me. I have to go look at the color genetic website so that I have a small understanding, but I am excited!!

Can she test to determine the breeds that make up a dog. And this is not for a Lacy.

UCDavis does not test for breeds. They sent me to a couple of different labs when I asked that question. They are http://www.dog-dna.com/ and http://www.wisdompanel.com/
They list the breeds that they test for. They will test for mixed breeds, pure breeds and the designer dogs!!
